Designed for secondary-school and university groups, this five-day educational expedition turns the Fayoum Depression into a field laboratory. Students learn how sedimentary layers, fossils and landforms help scientists reconstruct environments that existed millions of years ago. At Wadi Al-Hitan, they investigate globally important Archaeoceti fossils that document a major stage in whale evolution from land-dwelling ancestors to fully marine mammals.
The program combines the Fossils and Climate Change Museum, protected fossil trails, Wadi El-Rayan, Gebel Al-Mudawara, Lake Qarun and Tunis Village. Field notebooks, observation prompts, rock and landscape interpretation, group discussion and a final evidence-based presentation make this a genuine learning journey—not simply a desert tour. Students observe only and never collect fossils, rocks or protected materials.

Your Day-by-Day Scientific Expedition
Five structured days connecting fossils, rocks, landscape processes, environmental change and scientific communication.
Meet our airport representative and transfer privately to the group hotel. After check-in, students attend an introductory briefing on geological time, sedimentary rocks, fossil formation, field safety and the scientific importance of the Fayoum Depression. Teams receive field notebooks and observation roles.
Travel to Fayoum and change to suitable local vehicles for the protected-area route. At Wadi El-Rayan, students examine how water, sediment movement and human intervention shape the landscape. Continue to Gebel Al-Mudawara and the Magic Lake area to identify erosion patterns, slopes, wind action and contrasting landforms before checking into the lodge.
Spend the expedition’s main field day at the UNESCO-listed Valley of the Whales. A geology specialist explains how fossils are dated and interpreted, while students follow protected trails to observe whale skeletons and marine remains in situ. Inside the Fossils and Climate Change Museum, groups connect anatomy, rock layers and environmental evidence to the transition of early whales from land to sea.
Observe Lake Qarun as part of a changing basin and discuss evaporation, salinity, biodiversity and evidence of past environments. Continue with a supervised heritage stop in Tunis Village, where a pottery workshop links local clay, material properties and firing processes to practical design. Students complete their field notes before returning to Cairo.
After breakfast, student teams prepare a concise evidence-based presentation answering a central question: how do fossils and rocks reveal that today’s desert was once a marine environment? Following feedback and final reflection, check out and transfer privately to Cairo International Airport for departure assistance.
