The Nubian Museum: The Story of Nubia Across the Ages

Opened in 1997, the Nubian Museum was created in response to the international campaign to save the monuments and heritage of Nubia. Its galleries trace the region’s geographical, social and cultural development from prehistory to modern life.

Designed by Egyptian architect Mahmoud Al-Hakim, the building is clad in local sandstone and pink granite and draws inspiration from traditional Nubian architecture. The museum received the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 2001.

Across three floors, thousands of artefacts, monumental sculptures, dioramas and traditional crafts illuminate Nubia’s long story. Outside, gardens, rock inscriptions, a reconstructed Nubian house and symbolic waterways extend the experience.
