A Thousand Years of Cairo Along One Street

Al-Muizz Street follows the historic north–south spine of Fatimid Cairo. The Ministry traces it to the era of Caliph al-Muizz li-Din Allah, whose Fatimid rule in Egypt began after Cairo was founded in 969.

Running from Bab al-Futuh in the north toward Bab Zuwayla in the south, the street passes an extraordinary concentration of religious, domestic, commercial and defensive monuments. The Ministry counts twenty-nine monuments spanning roughly the tenth to nineteenth centuries.

Today the architecture remains woven into everyday Cairo: historic façades stand beside traditional shops, craftsmen, cafés and busy lanes. That combination of monumental heritage and living city life is what makes Al-Muizz different from a conventional archaeological site.
