Seti I’s Masterpiece in the Sacred City of Osiris

Abydos, ancient Abdju, was one of Egypt’s most revered pilgrimage centers and the principal cult place of Osiris. Its best-preserved monument is the nineteenth-dynasty memorial temple built by Seti I and completed in part by Ramesses II.

Unlike the conventional straight axis of many Egyptian temples, Seti I’s monument turns into an L-shaped plan. Two hypostyle halls lead to seven parallel sanctuaries honoring six gods and the deified king.

Its refined raised reliefs preserve some of the finest carving of the New Kingdom. Beyond the chapels lie the celebrated Abydos King List, the Osiris complex and the monumental Osireion, while a separate temple of Ramesses II stands nearby.
