Aga Khan Mausoleum: A Modern Landmark in Historic Aswan

Set high above the west bank of the Nile, the Aga Khan Mausoleum was created as the resting place of Sultan Muhammad Shah, Aga Khan III, the 48th Imam of the Nizari Ismaili Muslims. Construction began in the 1950s, and the building was completed around 1960.

Its monumental simplicity draws on Fatimid funerary architecture: warm stone walls, a dominant central dome, an octagonal drum and smaller corner domes form a balanced silhouette visible from the estate. The hillside position makes the monument part of Aswan’s wider landscape.

Aga Khan IV, Prince Karim Al-Hussaini, was laid to rest in Aswan on 9 February 2025 in a private ceremony. The mausoleum remains a place of burial and respect. Interior access has long been restricted, so visitors should plan for exterior views unless current official arrangements confirm otherwise.
