Aswan Botanical Garden: A Green Island in the Nile

Aswan Botanical Garden occupies El Nabatat Island, a narrow Nile island west of Elephantine. Reached by boat, it offers an immediate contrast to Aswan’s granite outcrops and desert hills: cool paths, dense foliage and long views across the river.

The island became widely known as Kitchener’s Island after Horatio Kitchener developed collections of exotic trees and plants there around the turn of the twentieth century. It later passed to the Egyptian government and served botanical research as well as public recreation.

Today the garden brings together tropical and subtropical plants, ornamental flowers and striking palm collections. Its shaded avenues, birdlife and riverside edges make it one of Aswan’s calmest stops and an easy companion to a felucca journey.
