The Greco-Roman Museum of Alexandria is one of Egypt’s most important museums and the country’s only museum devoted entirely to the civilization of Egypt during the Greek and Roman periods.
The institution was established in 1892 after the efforts of Italian archaeologist Giuseppe Botti. As discoveries in Alexandria increased, the museum moved to a purpose-built neoclassical building completed in 1895.
After a major restoration and redevelopment project, the museum reopened in 2023 with redesigned galleries and a new upper floor. Its displays explore Ptolemaic and Roman Alexandria through sculpture, religion, trade, coins, funerary art, mosaics and daily life.
