Ramesses VI’s Tomb: A Universe Painted in Stone

KV9 was begun for Ramesses V and enlarged, completed and ultimately used by his successor Ramesses VI. Its long, straight axis descends for about 116.8 metres into the Theban cliffs.

The walls and ceilings preserve an exceptional concentration of royal funerary literature, including the Books of Gates, Caverns, the Earth, the Day and the Night, as well as sections of the Amduat.

The burial chamber is the visual climax: the sky goddess Nut arches across the ceiling while solar imagery and the broken granite sarcophagus evoke the king’s nightly death and dawn rebirth.
