Why Bab Zuwayla Cairo Matters
Bab Zuwayla is the surviving southern gate of Fatimid Cairo, built by the powerful vizier Badr al-Gamali in 485 AH / 1092 AD under Caliph al-Mustansir.
Its entrance is framed by two semicircular towers. In the fifteenth century Sultan al-Mu’ayyad Shaykh used their bases for the twin minarets of his adjoining mosque.
The gate also witnessed the end of Mamluk rule: the Ottoman Sultan Selim I ordered the execution of the last Mamluk sultan, Tumanbay, here in 1517.
