Why Prince Taz Palace Cairo Is Exceptional

Prince Taz Palace Cairo stands on Al-Suyufiyya Street in the al-Khalifah district. It was commissioned in 753 AH / 1352 AD by Prince Saif al-Din Taz, who served as dawadar of Sultan al-Saleh ibn al-Nasir Muhammad ibn Qalawun and as deputy of Aleppo.

Egypt’s Ministry of Tourism & Antiquities describes it as one of the finest and most beautiful examples of Bahri Mamluk palace architecture and the largest in area. Its defining feature is the maq’ad overlooking a large inner courtyard.

The palace rewards close attention to decoration: geometric and vegetal ceiling motifs, inscription bands recording the prince’s titles, and the cup emblem associated with his former office as the sultan’s cupbearer.
