Avenue of Sphinxes: Luxor’s Sacred Processional Route

The Avenue of Sphinxes is the monumental dromos linking Karnak Temple with Luxor Temple across the heart of ancient Thebes. Stretching for roughly 2.7 kilometres, it transformed the city into one continuous ceremonial landscape.

Earlier sections developed over centuries, while much of the surviving avenue is associated with Nectanebo I of the 30th Dynasty. Human-headed sphinxes and ram-related forms guarded different stretches of the sacred approach.

During the Opet Festival, divine barques travelled between the two temples, renewing kingship and celebrating the Theban triad of Amun, Mut and Khonsu.
