The Mosque of Muhammad Ali stands inside Saladin’s Citadel and was commissioned by Muhammad Ali Pasha on the site of former Mamluk palaces, reaching completion in 1848.
Known as the Alabaster Mosque because of its extensive marble paneling, it follows an Ottoman-inspired plan with an open courtyard and a square prayer hall crowned by a huge central dome and surrounding semi-domes.
Its two slender minarets rise 84 meters, while the courtyard contains the famous clock presented by Louis Philippe of France. Muhammad Ali’s marble tomb lies inside the mosque.
